Chapter Eighteen

Edgar

Once he was in the queue, it hadn’t taken Edgar long to realize he had no idea what Zack usually drank. He’d been so busy mocking him for being such a good citizen, obviously completely unused to breaking rules, that it had simply slipped his mind to ask. He’d been about to forsake his place in the queue and go over there and ask when the good-looking stranger had strolled over and joined Zack. It wasn’t the fact he was sat with Zack that bothered him. It was the way he looked at him: that mixture of fondness and annoyance; the way you looked at someone you knew extremely well. Like you knew what they were about to say even before they’d said it.

He dismissed the momentary thought that the man could be a relative. The vibe between them was all wrong. Maybe just a friend then? But, that didn’t ring true either. By the time Edgar had been served, the man had gone.

Finding out the man was an ex came as no surprise. There were questions Edgar wanted to ask Zack. How long were you together? Who ended it? How serious was the relationship? How recent an ex is he? He held back: leaping from feigned disinterest to jealous interrogator was too big a step—even for him. Besides, Zack had already walked away once.

That move had really thrown Edgar. It wasn’t so much the fact that Zack had done it. He’d had men do it to him before. Plenty of times. It was the look on Zack’s face that said he meant it, and he wasn’t coming back. A look which made it clear that if he ever saw Edgar walking toward him at any point in the future, he’d cross over the road to avoid him.

It had been enough to spur Edgar into dropping all his hastily erected relationship barriers and throw caution to the winds. When Zack hadn’t kissed him back, it had seemed like it was too little, too late. And now there they were, with Zack expecting that explanation. Only problem was, Edgar wasn’t sure what he was supposed to say. Was he meant to put his pathetic relationship history on the line? He stared down at his coffee, trying to think of a good opening.

It was Zack who cracked first. “You said you’d explain.”

Edgar lifted his head, meeting Zack’s gaze. “Yep. I did.”

“Seven.”

Edgar frowned unable to fathom why Zack had just spouted a random number at him. Was that the amount of time he had to explain? If so—still random. “Seven what?”

Zack’s cheeks flushed and he looked away. “You have seven freckles on your nose. I’ve been wanting to count them for a while.”

Unable to keep the huge smirk off his face at Zack’s admission, Edgar leaned forward onto his elbows. “Is that all you want to do to them? Count them?”

Zack shrugged, before he too broke into a grin. “Possibly not.”

The shared moment instilled Edgar with a new resolve. He took a deep breath.
